Briefly we are a voluntary community group based here in Chirk, north Wales. As well as humanitarian aid work we also contributed very much to the community life of this small town.
We started working with Belarus in about 1994 with aid to an orphanage but since November 1997 have been linked with a youth group in Brest called PEACE CHILD.
In November 1997 we hosted a visit of 20 teenagers and leaders from PEACE CHILD to our town and they performed in churches, schools etc., the story of CHERNOBYL and the after affects. They returned to the UK in April 1998 to perform at Central Hall, Westminster on the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
In April 1999 the first youth exchange from Wales took place with our young people staying with the families of PEACE CHILD. So successful was the visit that the young people wanted to help further hence this year we have two projects with Brest. In August 1999 a group of 20 teenagers and their leaders visited this area for 16 days as part of the return leg of the exchange programme.
In April 1999 we hosted a two week visit of a law student from Brest University. The student spent time shadowing solicitors, magistrates, judges etc. to learn something about our legal system.
